Cross Posted, please excuse the duplication....

Here is a librarian from the Univ. of Arizona (my alma mater) who is
going to Afghanistan to train librarians. The Library School at U of A
is trying to raise money for her to purchase library shelving and basic
teaching supplies and equipment for her work. If you are interested,
please read on.

Help UA Librarian Atifa Rawan with her work training librarians in
Kabul,
Afghanistan. Atifa Rawan is a Social Sciences Documents Librarian at
the UA
Main Library. She went to Afghanistan in 2002 to prepare a report for
The Asia
Foundation on the state of the libraries there. Atifa is returning to
Afghanistan in mid-October, 2003 (in two weeks!), to train librarians in
Kabul
as part of her sabbatical project from the UA library.
Please help, with whatever dollar amount you can give, to support
Atifa in
purchasing some library shelving and basic teaching supplies and
equipment for
her work at Kabul University Library and other libraries in that
region. Atifa
will be in Kabul for about one month for this trip and then she will
return to
Afghanistan in the Spring of 2004.
The library infrastructure in Afghanistan has been destroyed due to
wars
and other disasters. The people of Afghanistan need access to
information.
Before that can happen on a consistent, dependable level, the libraries
need
trained librarians and basic resources. Supporting an effort such as
Atifa
Rawan's work there is a very direct way to support access to information
for
the people of Afghanistan.
Lisa Martin, a current SIRLS student, is coordinating the effort.
Lisa will
collect the donations. PLEASE MAKE CHECKS OUT TO: LISA MARTIN. Donations
also
can be dropped off at the SIRLS office or mailed to SIRLS at:
                    SIRLS Office
                    Atifa Rawan Fund
                    1515 E. First Street
                    Tucson, AZ 85719

Donations will be accepted until noon on Tuesday October 14th. Any
monies
collected after that date can be used for future phases of this
project. Book
donations are not being accepted at this time. There have been book
drives for
Kabul University Library based out of the UA in the past and there may
be
similar efforts in the future, however, this fund drive will just cover
library
shelving and teaching supplies and equipment.

Please Note: Any donations will unfortunately not be tax-deductible.

If there are any questions about this fund-raising effort, please
direct
those questions to SIRLS student Lisa Martin at lmart@dakotacom.net
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR THIS WORTHY CAUSE!!

Susan,
My idea for the subject line is: Help UA Librarian and Kabul Libraries
If you have a different idea, go for it! I am not used to posting such things to listservs so I welcome any editing you may feel is advisable.  I ran this past Atifa and she added and changed a few things, so it works for her. Should 'University of Arizona' be in the address I give for SIRLS somewhere?  Should we be concerned about having a record of who is donating simply for the purpose of thanking them?  Thanks for being willing to deal with this as I know it represents an addition to your and possibly other people's workload over the next few weeks.
