I received a lot of response to my inquiry. A lot of people asked me to
summarize what is included in the annual reports....
statistics including number of requests, books cataloged, circulation,
things routed, things filed, billable hours, firm billings, number of times
our sites are hit on the intranet, Lexis and
Westlaw billing vs. bills, that type of thing
general statistics (we keep track of how many bills we pay, books we shelve,
books we process), reference statistics (billable and non-billable; this is
harder to do, I admit!). We also report on seminars/training we provided to
attorneys/staff, weeding the collection (mention how much $$ will be saved)
and any other special events hosted (like National Library Week
Section 1 is titled What We Used Versus What We Bought: Print Collection. I
compare the number of reference requests by subject area to the $ we spend
on each subject area in the fiscal year. That way, we can ensure that the
majority of our budget is going to the most in-demand subject areas.
Section 2 is titled Electronic Database Usage, in which I compare the number
of times I used each electronic resource to the actual usage cost of the
firm (as opposed to what we actually paid given our flat rate contracts). I
need to rework this section to create an overall view of the entire firm's
electronic usage.
Section 3 is titled What We Needed That We Did Not Have and What We Had That
We Did Not Need, where I discuss what print resources we cancelled and what
we borrowed from other libraries.
Michelle, see AALL Spectrum June 2003 p. 10-11+ "the annual report: an
overlooked opportunity to tell the library's
story"
Several people also emailed me or faxed me a copy of their annual report.
You can see one online at http://www.socialaw.com/annualreport/finances.htm
Thanks for all the help!!!!!!
