It was troubling to learn that The Quotable Lawyer may not be reliable
(although if that is so, it is better to learn it than to go on in
ignorance), so I have looked further to see whether another source than TQL
cited might be found. A Canadian court attributes the quotation to Lord
Chancellor Thurlow and cites a different source. One could hope this is
reliable.
"As the English jurist Lord Chancellor Thurlow (1731-1806) is quoted as
saying: 'Did you ever expect a corporation to have a conscience, when it has
no soul to be damned, and no body to be kicked?' J. Poynder, Literary
Extracts, (1844) Vol. 1, page 268."
