Everetts is an international bookseller and subscription agent based in the
UK and used by many law libraries in the United States. Thanks to Jan
Anderson at Georgetown and Denis Eagle at Everetts for the following
information.
Colin Harrison, Managing Director of W.H. Everett & Son Ltd, communicated to
customers in late August that Everetts had reached provisional agreements to
sell their subscription business to Swets and their book business to
Blackwell UK.
In a letter dated August 28, 2003, Colin Harrison, Everetts Managing
Director, said: "Why are we selling? It is because every year it becomes
more difficult for library suppliers and subscription agents to cope with
rising costs, and margin pressures from publishers. At the same time we are
facing increasing demands for new services from customers while much of the
more profitable STM print subscription business is being switched to
electronic and often direct supply. Agents are having to re-invent
themselves as broad based intermediaries, and this requires a level of
investment only possible for the largest of them like Swets."
The agreements are expected to be complete by the end of September. Key
customer services people will be at Everetts "for a while" and processes
will continue on the Everetts system until the integration on the Swets
system is complete. Standing orders and book approval and notification plans
will transfer to Blackwell's. Monograph orders can continue to be sent to
Everetts until the end of September and will be fulfilled by them. After
that date, orders may be directed to Blackwell's Book Services.
