The little I know about this is that, O"NET's is based on the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. But they do tinker with it or refine it, so that's where the difference lies.

Subject: Dictionary of Occupational Titles (Department of Labor)
I hope someone who has more experience with the Dictionary of Occupational Titles can advise me. I am a little uncertain whether or not I have a problem.
In our central library, we have the DOT (4th edition revised, 1991). We have supplemented this print publication with the Department of Labor's DOT site (http://www.oalj.dol.gov/libdot.htm).
About a year ago, the local magistrate judges asked for a copy in their small shared library in a distant part of our courthouse. Instead of buying the original GPO title, we picked a single volume from JIST Publishing (Indianapolish, Indiana). The JIST publication comes under the title O*NET: Dictionary of Occupational Titles (2d ed.).
Our magistrate judges are dissatisfied with the JIST edition. For one reason, the JIST work uses a classification system for occupations which is significantly different than the DOL classification system. In addition, there is no index or cross reference between the original DOL classification system and the JIST classification system.
I have not checked with the Department of Labor library about this question. I'm hoping someone out there can advise me about preferred commercial substitutes for the Dictionary of Occupational Titles. Or, is there something here that I am missing in my inexperience with the title?
