Re: Cataloguing software for home library?

Kenny and Bruce,

We are using an Open Source Library system called PHPMyLibrary
(http://phpmylibrary.sourceforge.net).

Currently we have 28,000 titles in the catalog and it works like a charm.
We are using it on a webhosting service that is Linux based, but I believe
that it has been tested on Windows 2000/XP.

PHPMyLibrary uses PHP as the programming language, MySQL, a little bit of
python for MARC record conversion, and Apache for the webserver. We were
able to batch upload the MARC records directly into the system. It
probably took about 1/2 a day to set it up and have it running.

We have Innovative for our acquisitions project, but are using PHPMyLibrary
for our OPAC. This saved us many, many, many thousands of dollars over
going with III for an opac.

There is another Open Source Library system called Koha
(http://www.koha.org) that is PERL based. However, it required more "root"
access to the server than our webhost would allow us to have. . . It is a
much more complete system and includes an acquisitions module. . . . It
looks very nice and has more users than PHPMyLibrary.

Subject: Cataloguing software for home library?

I have an acquaintance who has a home library with about 15,000 books
and would like to catalogue them. Can anyone recommend an off-the-shelf
software program?

Thanks,

Kenny G.
