Julius Marke

Julius Marke was one of the giants of our profession. He was a past
President of AALL, an outstanding law librarian, teacher, scholar, and
author. When I spoke with him in Orlando, his mind was as keen as ever
and was still actively involved in a variety of scholarly projects. He
contributed scores of articles to the New York Law Journal on matters of
legal research and law library management. Many of the articles were
assembled into "Legal Research and Law Library Management," a work he
co-authored with the late Richard Sloan, another giant who died late
last year. Both were very supportive of my own publishing efforts and
contributed reviews to the New York Law Journal, for which I will always
be deeply grateful. Many may not realize that he was also involved in
the early activities of the Committee on Relations with Publishers and
Dealers (the predecessor committee to CRIV) which led to the enactment
of the FTC Guides for the Law Book Industry. And I know that I have
touched upon just a few of many contributions to the profession over his
50+ year career.
