I am giving up and turning to the list for help answering this question.
There was a major arbitration in 1990 where the Major League Baseball
Players Association (in New York) filed a series of grievances against 26
major league clubs accusing the owners of collusion when negotiating
baseball contracts. The case ultimately went to the US Supreme Court in
2000 when Steve Garvey tried to reject the settlement. The end result was
the award of $280 million dollars set aside in a fund which is paid out to
players who played during the seasons (1985, 1986, and 1987) in question. I
have been asked to find the players names listed in the complaint(s).
According to the Baseball Commissioner's office this information is "public
record".
To date, I have tried commercial databases, a sports almanacs, baseball
encyclopedia, and the Internet looking for this "public information".
However, I can't find all the players names. I got a great timeline of this
story from Lexis which gave me 7 player names ruled as "new look" free
agents from the 1st grievance filed, 12 players ruled as "new look" free
agents from the 2d grievance filed, and supposedly there 15 players from the
3rd grievance filed. Unfortunately, I can't tell if this is all or just
some of the number of players involved. I'll admit it - I am now stuck. If
anyone can direct me to a source or just tell me the answer (and where they
found the information) I would be most grateful. Baseball is now my least
favorite sport.
Many thanks,
Liz Petty
