Friends,
Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA-9) and three cosponsors this week reintroduced
the Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act (DMCRA) that corrects many of
the excesses of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act by reaffirming
fair use in the digital age. Mr. Boucher is a great champion of
libraries, and he has asked us to help him get additional cosponsors for
the DMCRA of 2003. In addition to Mr. Boucher, the other cosponsors
are: Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA-4), Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL-6) and
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI-1).
The DMCRA of 2003 was referred to the House Energy and Commerce
Committee, where Chairman Billy Tauzin (R-LA-3) has promised to hold an
early hearing. We need to get as many cosponsors as we can for this
important legislation before hearings are held.
The AALL ACTION ALERT: "Reaffirm Fair Use--Cosponsors Needed for the
Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act of 2003" is at:
<http://www.ll.georgetown.edu/aallwash/aa01082003.html>. Please take a
few minutes to draft and fax to your representative a short letter
urging the cosponsorship of the DMCRA of 2003. You'll find more
information and helpful talking points in the alert.
Enactment of the DMCRA of 2003 is among the top AALL legislative
priorities for the 108th Congress, and your voice on this issue is much
needed and very important to our efforts. Please feel free to share
this message broadly with colleagues and friends.
Thank you very much,
Mary Alice Baish
