Reference/Electronic Services Librarian (Job # 3047B)
Reports to the Associate Director/Head of Public Services
General Description: Under the supervision of the Associate Director/Head of Public Services, the Reference/Electronic Services Librarian participates in reference services, including evening and weekend rotations, and in maintaining electronic services in the Law Library, including computing services and A/V support. Along with the Public Services staff, this position participates in all other Public Services activities: interlibrary loan, circulation and reserve functions, faculty liaison, and legal research instruction.
Detailed Description: Part of a library unit, defined as Public Services, and consisting of the Associate Director/Head of Public Services, the Electronic Services Librarian, the Reference/Electronic Services Librarian, the Part-Time Reference Librarian, and the Library Associate I for Circulation. Duties include:
Reference Services: Provides reference instruction and assistance to students, faculty, lawyers, and the general public in the use of the Law Library, including LEXIS and WESTLAW and other electronic and print research tools, as well as the online catalog.
Computing Services: Provides electronic services in the Law Library, including the maintenance of the computer labs and server, library staff computers and printers, CD-ROM equipment and servers, and the Library's Web site. Recommends new hardware and software acquisitions, and has a role in collection development of digital resources. Provides in-house training on electronic resources. Works closely with the Library Director, the Associate Director/Head of Public Services, the Electronic Services Librarian, and the Law College Director of Computing. The skills needed include general knowledge of hardware and software used in law libraries and the ability to judge the appropriateness of electronic applications to a particular situation.
Audio and Video Services: Provides backup audio and video support for the College of Law and the Law Library. In consultation with the Associate Director/Head of Public Services and the Electronic Services Librarian, reviews and modifies audio and video policies and procedures as required and makes recommendations for new equipment acquisitions.
Legal Research Instruction: Offers lectures on specialized legal research in certain upper-level courses. Participates in small group instructional sessions as part of the first year Legal Research, Writing and Advocacy course.
OhioLINK and OCLC Interlibrary Loan Services: Provides interlibrary loan service to law faculty, law students, and law staff through the OhioLINK and OCLC online ILL systems. Participates in maintaining policies and procedures for ILL.
Circulation and Reserve Services: May be required to supervise the Circulation Desk in the absence of the Library Associate I; therefore, must be willing to learn circulation and reserve policies and procedures.
Miscellaneous: Attends meetings and conferences. Makes suggestions to the Associate Director/Head of Public Services concerning budget requests and suggestions for new acquisitions. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director or the Associate Director/Head of Public Services.
Qualifications:
Required: An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science. Must be willing to participate in providing reference service, including evening and weekend reference rotations, and all other Public Services duties.
Preferred: An ABA-accredited Juris Doctor degree; academic law library work experience; Web authoring skills; experience with computer hardware and software, A/V equipment, and Innopac.
Environment: We have an experienced Library staff of 14, including 7 librarians, and a collection consisting of over 314,000 volumes or equivalents. The College of Law has 28 full-time law faculty and 500-plus currently enrolled JD students. The University of Toledo is a beautiful urban campus (named "one of the 22 most beautiful" out of over 3,000 college campuses by the American Society of Landscape Architects), with over 20,000 non-law students and faculty. There are 1,750 members of the Toledo Bar Association, the majority of whom graduated from our law school, and about 1.4 million residents in northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan whom we also serve. The Law College and Library are in the midst of a major renovation. Projects already completed include: compact shelving throughout the first floor of the library, technology-enhanced classrooms, and the installation of wireless LAN access points throughout the building. Over the coming year, Library staff will move into all new office spaces, an
