All:

The editorial offices of the academic journal "Political and Legal
Anthropology Review" (PoLAR) welcome new subscribers. A semiannual
journal, PoLAR is devoted to the anthropology of law and politics, most
broadly conceived. It publishes work that is distinguished by its
innovative definition of problems, ethnographic orientation or theoretical
outlook.

The upcoming Spring 2003 special issue aims to take stock of the status of
the relationship between law and anthropology as disciplines and social
fields. The issue will consist of a forum of short essays by prominent
anthropologists and legal scholars. Each will present his or her views
about what is interesting, challenging, frustrating, or just plain
wrong-headed about work in the other discipline. The authors will also
reflect on the history and current state of collaboration and dialogue
between anthropologists and legal scholars, and where this dialogue might
go in the future. The issue will include book reviews of legal and
anthropological books with particular cross-over potential by reviewers of
the opposite disciplinary background from the authors. It will also
include a new "Directions" section featuring first person descriptions of
innovative methodological approaches to projects that engage law and
anthropology as knowledge practices and social facts.
