Antiquarian Courtroom Terms

The Superior Court is compiling a list of origins of common courtroom terms. What no one has been able to find is the origin of "the well" - the area between the counsel tables and the bench. We believe it to be of ecclesiastic origin - akin to the area in front of the altar in Eastern Orthodox, Episcopal and Roman Catholic Churches. Does anyone know the answer?
