Well, about half of us have done this or at least heard of it.

The other half were totally aghast at the mere thought of asking
accounting for a blank check, regardless of what was written in the
notation line.

Yup, I had to do that a couple times when I was practicing law. As I
recall, it was to out of state courts for copies. And it was the same
situation - not sure how much it will be, label it not to exceed $10, or
whatever. Hey, when you are desperate, you do it.

Good Afternoon!

The "Send us a blank check" quote is not from the alleged South
African
official trying to smuggle $ out of the country....

It is from the State Bar Court of California.

I ran a search on the CA State Bar website for an attorney and came up
with "not entitled to practice law in Calif." They supplied a phone
number
for the State Bar Court if you want to order a copy of the discipline
record
to get the juicy details. You get a recording which indicates that since
they cannot ascertain the length of the document you should snail mail
them
a BLANK CHECK....and you are advised to write in the notation line "for
not
more than $30"...and the service takes a 7-10 days.

Let me run down to my accounting dept and ask for a blank check....with
the
"not for more than $30" notation, of course....

There IS good news, however! If you run the attorney's name in the
regular
search box (as opposed to the one labeled "attorney search") the
pertinent
details of the discipline record come right up in an online copy of the
CA
State Bar Journal. And I didnt even send the blank check. ;))

So, has anyone ever sent out any blank checks?? Just curious!

Ya can't make this stuff up.
