Position Announcement FCIL Librarian Univ. of Iowa
The University of Iowa Law Library has one of the half dozen largest
information resources collections among all law school libraries in the
United States with a full-time staff of about thirty. The University of
Iowa Law Library is now seeking candidates for the position of Foreign,
Comparative, and International Law Librarian. Foreign, comparative, and
international legal materials comprise approximately thirty percent of the
1,000,000 volumes and volume equivalents in the Law Library. Recognized
internationally as an exceptional legal research facility, the Law
Library's collection includes primary legal materials from a significant
number of foreign jurisdictions (with an emphasis on Europe) and secondary
materials dealing with all facets of foreign, comparative, and
international law. Also represented are major document collections for the
GATT/WTO, EU, UN, and other intergovernmental organizations. In addition,
the collection also contains an extensive collection of materials from
numerous international human rights organizations. The collection serves
an international research-oriented faculty and student body, many of whom
are involved in the Law School's LL.M and exchange programs.
The Foreign, Comparative, and International Law Librarian serves as part of
a team of reference librarians under the supervision of the Head of Public
Services. Duties of this position include the following:
Reference service to the Law School and University community. In addition
to providing reference assistance with foreign, comparative, and
international legal research, the incumbent will be expected to provide at
least some assistance with Anglo-American legal research.
Selection of foreign, comparative, and international law materials in both
traditional and electronic formats.
Development of guides, bibliographies, and instructional materials to
further assist library users to access international, comparative, and
foreign law materials in the Law Library's collection.
Legal research instruction in the areas of foreign, comparative, and
international law. The International, Comparative, and Foreign Law
Librarian will offer a general introductory course in international,
foreign, and comparative law research skills and several minicourses
devoted specifically to particular types of specialized research in these
areas.
Liaison service to faculty and foreign visitors, including individualized
assistance with research and instructional needs in foreign, comparative,
and international law.
Special projects and miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
M.L.S., or foreign equivalent, or significant experience as a substitute if
the candidate has a J.D. or LL.M. or foreign equivalent; library experience
in providing research support in the areas of foreign, comparative, and
international law as well as a working knowledge of legal research skills
in Anglo-American law; working knowledge of both civil law and common law
legal systems and international law and international organizations;
working knowledge French, German, or Spanish; strong commitment to faculty
and student research and service needs; ability to understand, utilize, and
integrate electronic resources with print sources in regard to both
reference and collection development efforts; excellent English language
and communication skills; ability to work effectively as part of a team;
evidence of self motivation and individual initiative.
Preferred Qualifications:
J.D. (or foreign equivalent) strongly preferred, but significant experience
may be substituted for the J.D.; extensive knowledge of foreign,
comparative, and international law and legal bibliography in those subjects
strongly preferred; working knowledge of more than one foreign language;
relevant teaching experience; experience in developing electronic research
tools.
