You might get some ideas on how to track an attorney's experience by
doing a docket search to find out how many cases he/she has filed and
what areas of law the cases typically fall into. For ideas on how to find
dockets on the web, see my article in the Los Angeles Lawyer magazine,
April 2002 re: docket research:
http://www.lacba.org/Files/LAL/Vol25No2/1120.pdf
For example, here in CA, our Cal App and Cal Sup courts created a free
docket database searchable by attorney name, party name, or docket no.
Our Los Angeles County Bar Assoc. (LACBA) recently created a similar
searchable docket database (free only if every attorney in your firm is
a member, otherwise there is an annual subscription fee option) for Los
Angeles County dockets (civil only). When I want to do a background
check on attorneys or even arbitrators and mediators for example, I
search the LACBA docket database. I can also search LACBA's dockets to
learn even more about judges, such as how many days they are typically
in trial, how many summary judgments they grant or deny and if anyone
has filed a peremptory challenge against them, and much more. Very cool
tool.
