Colleagues,
While I'm on standing order for Ken Svengalis's book (and I think it's
essential), there's another excellent resource that isn't often mentioned on
Law-Lib. I'm often asked to do subject bibliographies or compile lists
including costs of my firm's library resources by various practice groups,
in addition to making estimates of annual increases. I find that Arlene Eis
Web-based LawTRIO for information on newsletters, looseleafs and CD-ROMs is
essential. The LawTRIO combines information on all three (but it's also
possible to subscribe to single titles), and its searchable by title,
subject and publisher, so that I can quickly find the exact title and
current price of legal publications. I find it easier to locate information
than on the publisher's Web sites and the Infosources Web site is very well
designed. I think Arlene's publications are very reasonably priced, but you
can take a look at her site at http://www.infosourcespub.com.

Subject: RE: Annual Publishers' Increases--Update

I wanted to ask Margaret if it was okay to post this. I also was
spurred to order Ken Svengali's book, which someone else
suggested was a good place to look. I was going to wait
until that book came in to send a post but people are getting
anxious for an answer. When Ken's book arrives I will let
you know what he says about publishers' inflation.

Generally accepted rule of thumb is 12 to 15%. Frankly outrageous in light
of the current 2% national inflation rate.
In February of this year, we conducted an inflation study on our own
collection, comparing straight actual expenditures per title. The results
are listed below. This study was by no means exhaustive, it does not catch
title changes, and is affected by the variations caused by volume vs.
pocket
part replacements.
Hope this helps!

The list above documents the cost of maintaining specific titles purchased
since conversion to the new library system in July, 2000.
For consistency, only titles for which we show expenditures both in the
fall
of 2000, and in the fall of 2001 are included.
Titles with spring renewals, and titles with name or vendor changes, are
necessarily excluded.

I know it's out there, I just can't find it at 5:15 pm.
Can someone please direct me to the latest info on annual
legal publishers' increases? It's budget time again.
Thanks,
