Hi, Susan!!! Actually many, many years ago, like about 20 years or more, for
several months running the ABA Journal carried letters to the editor on this
subject. An attorney for some large corporation sent an inquiry to the ABAJ
indicating that the company doctor is referred to as Dr, the company shrink with
a PhD is called Dr., but the JD holders are Mr, Ms., etc., and wondering why
this is so. For the next three or four issues there were numerous comments
written on this. I remember one comment that the first doctorate in history was
the doctorate in law from a university in Italy. There was one letter that in
one US state, I can't recall which one, but a mid-West state, it was common
practice to refer to JD holders as Dr. So, you might check out some old ABA
Journals. Jim Sherman, National University Library, Fresno, CA
