I got only a few responses to my question, and all asked for anonymity, so
here is my edited response:
5 firms used a consultant at least once.
One firm had a positive (money saving) experience.
One firm got input from a consultant one time, but decided not to use
his/her services.
One firm used a consultant's services for one year, but doesn't expect to
use his/her services for the current contracts.
Two firms used consultants, and some of the recommendations had bad results.
And, for the record, we are not going to use the services of a consultant.
Partly this is due to the fact that we have a Materiel Group that negotiates
contracts for services enterprise wide.
