If you happen to be in the mood for sinister librarians, however, check out
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco (or watch the movie with Sean Connery).
Set in a monastery, the head librarian (who is blind IIRC) poisons a
particularly infamous book that he doesn't want anyone reading (it deals
with *GASP* humor). As a result, each patron (monk) who tries to read the
forbidden text dies, setting up a mystery for the main character to try to
solve.
The book has quite of a bit of interesting detail on real (albeit medieval)
library issues. The monastery library has a fascinating pre-Dewey
classification scheme for its books, and there is some discussion on the
indexing methods used by the librarians to record their new acquisitions.
And, of course, the library's method of "acquiring" books is quite cool.

On the positive side there are very few times that librarians are portrayed
in sinister ways. As a matter of fact I think it is a credit to the
essential nature of the library profession that we are portrayed so many
times in the media. We are among the elite like doctors, lawyers,
scientists, teachers, professors, reporters, police officers, military
personnel and the like. How many times and "in what manner" are economists
portrayed or accountants or claims adjustors or human resources personnel
or plumbers or computer geeks (I mean information technology
professionals)?
Sometimes our profession is portrayed in stereotypical fashion, but so are
many other professions. That is the nature of communicating via images.
You don't have time develop all your characters. Perhaps we are bit
sensitive. I imagine there are very few professions that track and even
catalog their portrayal in the media like we librarians.
Hey, if we made it into Star Wars, Dinotopia, the Mummy and many other
recent films there is no stopping us.

I can't resist telling everyone who is going to see Star Wars II: Attack
of the Clones that they will get a laugh out of the stereotypical
librarian treatment in one scene of the movie. We really do need to talk
to George Lucas about this. Why do we always have to be old and wrinkled?
