Colleagues,
Do you remember your first AALL Conference? You may have been concerned
that you did not know many other law librarians. You probably remember
colleagues who attended programs and parties with you and introduced you
to the famous and the notorious in our profession. Over the years we
have all made many friends in law librarianship and we eagerly look
forward to the annual meeting to see everyone, have a good time and
advance our careers. But each year there are still new law librarians
who are attending the AALL conference for the first or second time, and
they would appreciate our help in meeting colleagues and networking
successfully within our profession. The Mentor Project was created to
pair our newer colleagues with experienced librarians to share
professional advice, support, guidance and friendship.
If you are a newer law librarian, or one contemplating changing careers
within our profession, consider participating in the Mentor Project. If
you are an experienced librarian, please sign up to be a mentor. Some
newer librarians think they should not volunteer to be mentors because
they have only a few years of experience. You would be some of the most
helpful mentors because you have recently joined the profession and can
give valuable advice from your recent experience. Some librarians in
high positions say they do not have time to be mentors. You are the
role models for our profession and it says a lot when important people
take time to mentor the newer members in a profession.
The Mentor Project is open to librarians from all types of libraries.
Each participant will be assigned to a member whose profile matches, as
closely as possible, his or her request. Please visit our website at
http://www.aallnet.org/committee/mentoring/mentor_project.html and
submit your application by June 1, 2002. There are also interesting
articles and tips on mentoring at the site. Thank you for participating!
