Here are the results of my survey on credits for Legal Research and Legal
Writing. 24 schools responded. Thanks again to those of you who did
respond.
1) 6 out of the 24 schools (25%) that responded offer separate credit for
Legal Research.
2) The remaining 18 schools that responded all have integrated Legal
Research and Legal Writing programs. It appears that there are also some
elements of integration in some of the 6 programs where separate credit is
given for Legal Research.
3) The number of credits/units given for Legal Research (LR) and Legal
Writing (LW) varies a great deal. The range is from 2 total credits for
LR and LW at the low end to 8 total credits for LR and LW at the high end.
The average is about 4 or 5 total credits.
Of the 6 schools where separate credit is given for LR, 4 schools give 1
credit just for LR and 2 schools give 2 credits just for LR. (Looking at
the amount of separate credit given for LR as a percentage of the total
amount of credit given for LR and LW, the range is approximately 15% to
40%).
Hope this data is of interest to you. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Brian Raphael
