West's Federal Appendix of Unreported Cases

My rep sent me the letter attached giving me advance warning about the
imminent arrival of the Federal Appendix of Unreported Cases. This will be
printed books, with headnotes and "other editorial enhancements" covering US
Circuit Court unpublished opinions. West estimates that 12 volumes will be
published by the end of December 2001. I have no idea if this is a
retrospective compilation or will start currently or what. The letter
didn't say.

I will leave discussion of the philosophical implications on legal citation
and research to the legal research pundits.

In an era in which all libraries have been shedding printed reporters, and
in which the resale market value of a set of reporters is zero, actually
less than zero because we have to pay to get them hauled away, why would
West think it a good business practice to introduce a new printed reporter
series? In combination with Lexis in the mad rush to offer annual contracts
for their services they have killed the value of reporters both to resell
and to retain, and much of the use of the ones they print now has shifted to
online.

We survive here without the NYS, Northeastern, Northwestern, Southern,
Southwestern and Pacific. If space ever becomes an issue again I will wave
a fond farewell to the Atlantic and Southeastern and the Bankruptcy. I
can't think I am alone. And it is an easier decision not to take something
new than it is to throw out 70 shelves of reporters you have diligently
saved for 40 years. Besides we are all used to finding these unreported
cases online.

At least the first two volumes will be free, so we have a while to figure
out if we want to subscribe. I guess West figures it has to give you a
couple of freebies to see if they can win your hearts.
