Dear Colleagues
I did not intend my response to Patricia Link to be posted to the list,
although I have no problem with announcing what I have been considering in
my studies.
I am, however, interested in a theme that was pursued about a year ago on
billable hours. In the responses to requests to the list by Patricia Renza
and Auburn Steward many of you responded with estimates of time spent on
billable hours. I did not see any explanation over what can be billed and
supposed it to refer to work done for a client for which the practitioner
(or the library) can levy a fee. If this is not the case I would appreciate
being corrected.
My questions:
1. Do you charge internal clients, ie the practitioners, and does this
count as billable time ?
2. Are you able to charge internal clients on a pro rata basis for the
performance of library support activities (like looseleaf interfiling, data
input, etc) for which the organisation would otherwise be prepared to pay
fees to an outsourcing agency ? Could these support services then be
regarded as billable hours, although perhaps on a lower scale of fees ?
We in South African law firms do not appear to be under the same pressure of
the billable hour. but we are under pressure to justify our existence.
