Aleta,

The following sources may provide what you are looking for. They contain comprehensive industry information.

1. The most productive way to research an industry is to select the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code which best identifies the industry you are investigating. The SIC was developed by the Federal Government to facilitate the collection and presentation of industry data. It is a four-digit classification of all manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries. It is important to know an industry's SIC when looking for industry rankings or financial ratios.

Please refer to the: Standard Industrial Classification Manual. Executive Office of the President. Office of Management and Budget (1987).

2. S&P's Industry Surveys (loose-leaf) contains industry overviews; such overviews are updated annually. "Trends & Projections" and a "Monthly Investment Review" are provided to update economic and industry indicators and revenue, income, and profitability data on leading companies within each industry.

3. Forbes' Annual Report on American Industry ranks leading companies within select industries according to their profitability. Growth, sales, net income and profit margin data are provided for each listed company.

4. Manufacturing USA (Gale Research) is a guide to economic activity in manufacturing industries. It lists leading companies ranked by sales, number of employees and selected business ratios for each industry.

5. The Annual Statement Studies (Robert Morris Associates) provides financial and operating ratios for manufacturing, retailing, wholesaling, . . . lines of business by SIC code.
