Many thanks to everyone who shared info about the book DownTime : A Guide to
Federal Incarceration by David Novak.

We saw a fascinating review on this "book" in our local newspaper a few
months ago and decided to purchase it. It is an unusual look at life on the
inside written by a current FBI agent. If you have customers who want a
close up look
at surviving a federal lockup & all the nuances of the life of an inmate,
it
is a good read & worth the couple of bucks they are asking.

we bought this book for our lone criminal practice attorney. I read it
myself. It is very good. Very detailed substantive help and suggestions to
someone facing incarceration. from how muuch money, supplies, clothes, etc
to bring with you. to how to adapt to fellow inmates, inmate-correctional
officer relations, etc.
We probably don't have the 3rd ed., but if I remember it doesn't cost much
so this is probably a good investment.

Hi, Amy. One of my co-workers who subscribes to law-lib showed this to me,
because my family includes a member who will be a "guest" of the BOP for the
next 18 months. I found out about Downtime while surfing the Web one night
and ordered it directly from David Novak. Our family has found it
invaluable in helping us know what to expect in dealing with the system. I
only wish we had known about it earlier in the legal process, instead of
just days before my
family member self-surrendered to a federal facility. His attorney had no
real advice to give concerning what life would be like inside a prison. I
believe someone who doesn't fit the typical offender profile--especially
someone middle-aged without any record who is now facing incarceration for
the first time in their life--could benefit by having access to this book.
It could be helpful for attorneys in your area to have this as a resource to
share with their clients.
Part of the value of this resource, though, would be to publicize its
availability to your patrons. The people who need it most probably don't
even know it exists, and might not think to ask about anything similar at
the library.
There is something else to consider. Mr. Novak also makes available what he
calls BOP Guides for many federal facilities. They are orientation guides
that are put out by specific prisons. If you do decide to add Downtime to
your collection, you might also consider adding the BOP Guides for any
federal facilities that are in California.
Just a few thoughts from someone who knows waaay more about the topic than
she wants to.
