Try the following URLs:

http://ep.espacenet.com/ - a free patent database hosted and maintained by the European Patent Office; provides full images of U.S. patents dating back to 1920 (Note: the earlier patents may not contain complete information). You can search by title, inventor; applicant, etc.

http://www.delphion.com/ - the Delphion Intellectual Property Network, no longer IBM, hosts this website; the U.S. collection contains full images of patents dating back to 1790 (again, the coverage may be spotty); you can conduct free keyword searches, but a subscription is required to order documents, check legal statuses, obtain patent families, etc.

http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/ac/ido/ptdl/ptdlib_1.html - provides a list of PTDLs (Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries) located across the country; visiting or calling a PTDL may be your best bet in receiving expert assistance.

Hope this helps!
