The University of Kentucky College of Law in Lexington, Kentucky, has
reopened its search and seeks qualified candidates for the position of
Director of the Law Library, effective July 1, 2001.

QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified candidates must have a JD and MLS degree from ABA
and ALA accredited institutions respectively, as well as relevant
experience regarding the operation of a full service academic law library.
The Director must have a strong commitment to public service and the
ability to work in a complex and changing environment. The Director is
called upon from time to time to teach legal research and/or other related
courses in the curriculum including the first year legal writing and
research program, and so candidates should be interested in and qualified
to teach such courses. As well, the Director is an essential resource for
meeting the research, teaching and scholarship needs of our diverse faculty
and student body. Qualified candidates, therefore, will have outstanding
knowledge of research and teaching resource needs in that environment.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The Director of the
Law Library is responsible for managing the daily operations of the
library, organizing and leading the staff, currently of seven librarians
and seven other staff, and for acquiring and developing the collection
which currently comprises over 420,000 volumes. The College of Law has a
student body of approximately 420 and a full-time faculty of twenty-eight.
The Director is responsible for addressing the needs of, and maintaining
and fostering the positive relationship between, the law library and all
its constituents: students, faculty, alumni, and the practicing bar. In
addition, the Director provides advice and other information to the Dean
and the Faculty on the technology, information systems and computing needs
of the College.

The Law Library Director holds a joint faculty appointment in the College
of Law and the University Libraries, with the primary appointment in the
College of Law. The University of Kentucky Libraries system includes the
William T. Young Library, Medical Center Library, Law Library, Special
Collections and Archives, the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library,
Agricultural Information Center, Architecture Library, Education Library,
and six Science and Engineering Libraries. Combined holdings total more
than 2.7 million volumes. The system has a staff of 65 librarians and 121
support staff and serves a student body of 28,000. The library is a member
of ARL, SOLINET, ASERL, Educause, and the Center for Research Libraries,
and is a regional depository for federal government publications.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The Director's appointment will be tenure or
tenure-track, depending on the applicant's qualifications. The salary will
be commensurate with the Director's experience and qualifications.
