That might stop some of the newer virii from spreading, too. (Writ large to
appear more "legit") Attachment sizes needn't be so large if sent in ASCII
instead of Word or WordPerfect. More platforms could read them.

Should LAW-LIB limit postings to 15KB?

Subj: *From the moderator re: a vote Hello list members:
David Ibbetson has asked in the interest of shorter downloads, personal
enjoyment, and human rights, if our mailserver could be set to reject emails
over a certain length (he suggests 15KB) and all emails with attachments.
The answer, David, is yes we are able to do so. The next question is should
we? According to Rich Helmke, our system administrator, it is possible
to limit the size of any single attachment (actually "bounce" the message
back to the sender). Since every message is passed
through a virus-scan check, it can also be "sized" and rejected if
necessary. The digest routine is currently pretty dumb; it appends the
current message and then checks to see if the total digest size is greater
than 25KB which is a signal to send the digest. (Many STUMPERS members are
already on systems that will not accept messages greater than 30KB.) Rich
thinks for this list, a limit to 20 or 25KB per message to be reasonable. As
for attachments, Rich believes he is already blocking attachments --
although there is one case that still gets by him. Outlook users that send
"HTML" messages to STUMPERS are actually sending two copies of the message:
one in ASCII and one in HTML. This is called a "multi-part" message which is
supposed to allow 'dumb' email readers to see the ASCII part and 'smart'
(Outlook) readers to see the HTML with all its fancy markup language
(selecting fonts, color, bold, italics, etc.). He can't seem to strip that
second part before it hits the digest or the list and is looking at that
particular problem. He notes that other lists periodically ask their
members NOT to post messages to the list with HTML format selected. (In
Outlook, this is found under TOOLS/OPTIONS/SEND.) We have recently had
listmembers make this request (to not send HTML messages) to the list.
Something for Outlook users to consider seriously . . . After consulting
with Johan Koren, the faculty advisor of the Stumpers list, we've decided to
allow the listmembers to vote on whether to implement a size restriction. We
are asking that even though you may desire to make your opinions known to
everyone on the list, that you respond directly to me
(stumpers@email.dom.edu) and not to the entire list. Please vote on the
following options by February 1st to have your votes counted:
A. Do not impose any size restriction to email posts to the list.
B. Yes, limit postings to 15KB.
C. Yes, limit postings to 25KB.
How's that for democracy in action?

Ultimately, we voted for limiting to 15KB, as I recall.
