I agree about the "out of the office" messages. Perhaps the list owner could
set the list to ignore messages with the text "out of the office" or "on
vacation" in the subject line. I was a listowner once for the SLA Local
Arrangements list in 1999, and I set it up so that any message with those
subject lines would be ignored.
