The following message has been posted to several listervs to ensure wide
distribution. Apologies in advance for the inconvenience.
Last Friday, February 2 (Groundhog Day, appropriately enough) marked the
last day of the AALL Professional Development listserv discussion on
Librarians Taking Responsibility for Problems with Vendors. Many issues
were discussed and some great ideas and interesting insights emerged. As
moderator, I plan to provide an edited version of the discussions at
CRIVPage, CRIV's website <http://www.aallnet.org/committee/criv>. Some
threads of discussion were left dangling, as it were, and if you would like
to pursue them, please feel free to reply to me at cgraesser@brfg.com. I
will cross post the threads on law-lib and other librarian listservs.
One of the more intriguing topics was the cost of electronic publishing.
CRIV is considering a program on electronic publishing for its forum at the
AALL Meeting in Minneapolis, and a discussion of the costs and what goes
into them would definitely be a useful addition to the agenda.
The debate continues over who within a publishing company is best equipped
to serve the librarian. The latest submission is a dedicated account rep.
If you look at the many opinions expressed, a pattern emerges, in that no
one solution works for everybody. That says to me that the primary
principle that publishers and librarians alike should follow is flexibility.
Neither party should expect the other to completely conform to their
particular mold. I think librarians would be surprised at how fliexible
some companies are willing to be.
Finally, a question was raised about dealing with overly aggressive account
reps. (We won't name names here, because this can happen with any
publisher). This particular scenario involved a rep for a legal online
service at an academic library who interfered with in house programs.
Perhaps, in addition to librarians providing suggestions, publishers could
give us some advice about who to contact in the case of an aggressive
company representative.
Thanks again for participating!
