I have one more complaint/suggestion to those at West who monitor
this list: why on earth do you bill us for annual subscriptions after the
subscriptions have already begun? With almost every other legal publisher,
we will receive notice that subscriptions are due for renewal several months
in advance. It's ludicrous to receive an invoice in January for a
subscription that is due to renew in May, but at least we are given ample
opportunity to review the title and decide if we want to continue it or
cancel. With West, it's the exact opposite. Since there are no individual
renewal notices, the annual renewals appear on our statements, along with
all other materials that have shipped in the past month. For example, there
was a renewal entry on my most recent West statement for a newsletter. I
received the statement at the end of January, but the renewal term for the
newsletter begins January 1st. Consequently, by the time I've reviewed the
statement, reviewed the title and made a decision to cancel, I've received
at least one month, maybe two, of a newsletter that I've decided to cancel.
Sometimes West will delete the charges when I call to cancel. On this
latest instance, the person I spoke to on the phone said that I'd have to
pay for the prorated amount of the subscription that we'd already received.
This is very unfair and not a good business practice. It seems to me that
the system is designed to ensure that West will still collect a few dollars
on every cancelled subscription because of the time lag between the
subscription renewal date and the cancellation date.
I suggest that West look into this and find a way to put annual
subscriptions on statements one to two months ahead of their renewal dates.
