We, too, cleaned up our library by using those criteria listed. I would
advise you, however, to be sure that the local library on which you're
depending isn't likely to fail you. We donated our old stuff to the local
Bar library and the next year they disposed of everything and closed.

Luci--
We use the following criteria when weeding our serials:
1. Are the journals available electronically? Most digitized runs seem to
start in the '70s and '80s.
2. If not, are they readily accessible at another local library?
3. Will a local library accept donation of your materials and allow you
"visitation rights" if you ever need them again?
4. Will anyone EVER need the information?
The above causes some seemingly schizophrenic holdings, because we have
retained really old issues (from the '40s - '60s) and a current collection
that is weeded in accordance with our zero growth policy (i.e. when we add a
volume, another gets weeded).

I have the unenviable task of cleaning out the library at our firm. We have
law review journals back into the 1950s. Can anyone give me some guidelines
for how long to keep them? Are these collectable and the grouping should be
kept intact? Thank you for any help.
