conference name tags and vendor sponsors

about a week ago the association of american law schools held it annual
conference, in san francisco this year. as you may know this is the annual
conference for law professors -- several thousand in attendance. all the
usual vendors that sponsor events for aall meetings also sponsor major
events for aals. what caught my eye when i picked up my registration
carry all at the conference registration booth was that my name badge only
had "association of american law schools" on it in addition to my name and
law school affiliation.

as you may recall, last year for the first time our name badges and the
band of material connected to it that goes around our neck, had a vendors
name on it. a significant number of aall members object to
commercializing the name badges. commercializing the carry alls has been
around practically forever and acceptable, but should we allow it to
spread to our name badges.

hopefully the aall powers that be will return to following what aals does
about name badges. and even more hopefully, the vendors making donations
to aalls will accord law librarians the same courtesy they do law
professor and not request or have placed on name badges the name of a
vendor.
