some of you who responded to my earlier inquiry about your input in to the
selection of lexis/westlaw student reps asked me to summarize the
responses.
i had about 30 responses. no surprise to any of us, neither l or w has a
consistent policy about input on the selection of student reps. it really
turns on what the librarians require if l/w are to have student reps
working in the law library.
Responses:
1. one person said they no longer use l/w student reps and it works
pretty well for them. they find that by taking over l/w things themselves
it actually reduces the enormous amount of promotional materials
experienced when had a l/w student rep.
2. a few report, that after they have had input in the selection process,
they meet with the hired student reps to tell them what the library does
and does not want from a l/w student rep.
3. a few report having written guidelines they give and go over with the
student reps
4. a few report that the l/w full time rep asks the law librarians for
suggestions as to which students they should interview for student rep
positions.
5. the vast majority report that one of their law librarians interviews
all student rep candidates l/w are considering and that law librarian
gives the l/w full time rep his or her opinion of the candidates,
including that a particular candidate is not appropriate for the position
when there is such a candidate.
Thanks for everyone's input. albert brecht
