Thank you to everyone that replied this posting about two weeks ago now. I
appreciate the feedback. Several asked that I post my responses to the list
and so below in a nutshell this is what I found out. Innovative Interfaces
seems to be very popular. Over half of the responses I received were in
reference to this product. This is one I had sort of considered out of our
league earlier, but following all your responses I checked it out and it is
definitely out of our league with a minimum pricing of around $100,000.
Going from a homegrown Access system to that will not happen in my
workplace. A few others like InMagic and I am guessing they were referring
to their DBText product and not their relatively newer Bibliotech Pro
product. One responder indicated she was having problems with Glas in a
multi-location environment, while another found Glas worked well for her
library with WIN95, but she had heard for those with Windows NT things
weren't going as well. Finally Right-on another product also received low
ratings for my needs.

One additional useful response I received that I'd like to share offers a
few additional things to keep in mind when seeking out a system shared by
multiple branches: "... you need to look at closely is how "separate" you
want the information and functionality for each branch to be and how any
system you use deals with this. For example, how copy numbers are handled
(can you have copy 1, 2, 3 for each branch or are copies numbered 1 thru x
and assigned to various branch locations), whether a person doing serials
checkin in one site sees the other sites' issues/how easy it is to
mistakenly checkin a title belonging to another site. If you are using
electronic requests and reserves, does the system only send requests to
holding library or do the staffs have to look at list and sort out which
ones go to each library; do you want lawyers to view only their branch's
holdings or all the holdings, etc."

Thanks again for your help,
Julie

Subject: Library automation solution for multiple branches?

Please excuse the cross-posting.

I am looking very seriously at a handful of automation systems for our law
firm research center. We are interested in an integrated service that
covers catalog, serials and acquisitions modules. Anyone out there that is
happy with their system and is using it in a multi-location environment
please share with me the name of your service. Please also let me know if
your service is failing you in this type of environment. We will probably
need to share access with 8 branches and more on the way. Ability to
support multiple locations is one of our larger concerns in choosing a
system.

Thanks for any tips you have to offer.
Julie
