The senario: At approximately 4:30 on Thursday afternoon a nervous
paralegal came into the library and indicated that travel statistics were
needed for an early morning trial. She needed to know the number of Americans
that visited various tourist cities or countries around the
world for last year, or the last available statistical year.
The drama: My computer was constantly crashing; I had been sporting a
killer headache all day. And my lunch was revisiting me as she walked
in. It was not one of my better days.
The action: I started looking in all of the statistics sites that I had
bookmarked including including stat-usa.gov. This sources led me to an
organization: Travel Industry Association http://www.tinet.ita.org. I
called them (it was then after 5:00 and they connected me to the voice
mail of one of their researchers). The paralegal went back to her office
and started reviewing and searching on search engines. I also sent out
a note on the listserv with the hope that someone where had
encountered and answered the same puzzle. And then I started making
notes of possible information sources.
The conclusion: The paralegal found it at
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0778210.html . This source referred to
http://www.tinet.ita.doc.gov/. The paralegal was not able to tell me how
she found it except to indicate that she just started racing through
various search engines and plugged in various search terms. My thanks to all
who supplied suggestions; the suggestions included
web-site-www.tourismstatistics.com and
http://www.world-tourism.org/Offer.htm#Statis and www.astanet.com
and AAA (Triple A) and ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents). All
excellent. THANK YOU.
