Dear Law-libbers,
I am starting to "see the light" at the end of this "ILL from Heck."
I would like to extend a special thank you to all of you who emailed me
back. Your responses were more than I could have expected or even hoped
for. It only proves to me once again that Librarianship is one of the most
generous professions.
I (quickly) compiled the ideas sent to me into a list below just in
case anyone else runs into the same problem.
For anyone who is interested: So far I have been obtaining articles
from very kind ILL depts at local universities and an organization that
originally published a pamphlet that contains an article that I am looking
for. I tried Northern Light and although the publications were listed, I
was not able to locate the articles I was looking for. I am looking into
UnCover and the British Library now and will keep trying new services until
I obtain everything.
Thanks again,
Cassandra Porter

List of Recommendations Received:

I recommend Advanced Information Consultants in Canton MI (with branch
offices across the country). They have been working on a list of several
hundred documents for me and have done an excellent job. They are very
reasonably priced (about $12 for a non-rush article plus copyright).
They can accommodate rush delivery as well (for a higher fee)
Their phone number is 734-459-9090

Have you tried New York Public Express at 592-7200?
Also, out of state libraries tend to be more helpful than New York
libraries. The Queens Borough Public Library is very helpful though (ZQP
on OCLC).

TIS can take FAX requests on company letterhead or ALA forms (or
whatever...
as long as they know where to send the articles) at 800-289-3144. They
don't take Phone call requests. Price is based on your deadline. Usually
most are in the $20-26 range with copyright fees paid for next day
service... more if FAXed same day. Phone is 765-494-9876

University of Chicago will take ALA/letterhead/c.v. with cover letter, too.
I don't know their out-of-state FAX charges, but they offer a 4-6 hour
turnaround, next day, and 3-4 days. Costs include copyright. Their FAX is
773-702-3022, phone is 773-702-7031.

Wisconsin TechSearch uses Univ. of Wisconsin Madison's collection. You
have
to specify whether you want them to pay copyright or not, but their FAX is
800-514-1423. Didn't check their holdings, but they'll have most.

University of California's Boalt Express could probably get at
least some from the Business Library on campus. Doesn't pay copyright.
Fax
is 800-232-4896 and phone is 800-832-4586. Deadline determines costs.

I looked in the catalog for ISI Document Solutions (800-336-4474, press 5).
They carry every journal you listed. Their in-house collection, which can
be sent within 24 hours or via 30-minute fax, covers 1993 to the present.
Older issues can also be retrieved. They will take credit cards.

At least one university in DC has a fee-based service - try George
Washington University's GLIS (Gelman Library Information Service) at
202-994-6973, fax 202-994-7548 or email glis@gwu.edu. They have reasonable
fees, rush service if needed, and will invoice.

I have used ISI Document Solution (formerly The Genuine
Article) for SocSci articles - ISI is the producer of file 7
Social Sci Search, so their collection is good. Web address
is //ids.isinet.com

I've had great success with CARL Uncover. We're often asked to obtain
articles from obscure science journals, and CARL has over 17,000 titles.
Some titles allow you to download the articles, others have to be faxed to
you. They usually cost between $15 and $30. Here's the web address:
http://www.carl.org/carl.html
Select Search Uncover.

In addition to the resources mentioned in the LLRX article that Cindy Chick
mentioned, there is also the British Library Document Supply Centre. They
can
fax or airmail copies of articles from their collection, and they receive
all
of the journals you mentioned in your message. You would need to register
with
them and set up a deposit account (I think there's a registration fee as
well.) Here in D.C., the local OCLC consortium (Capcon) gets discounts for
its
members - perhaps there's a similar discount available in New York. The
web
site for the service is: http://minos.bl.uk/services/bsds/dsc/overview.html

off hand, I can think of Estis doc
delivery(http://www.lib.umn.edu/estis/copyform.html) &
UofMinn(http://www.biomed.lib.umn.edu/bishp.html) - both take orders on
the net & by fax.. There's also Carl Uncover & Northern Lights - all online
& accept CCs..
The first two are your best bet for pre1980s - the others may very well
have websites of their own & offer CC purchase of articles... Many Journal
Publishers offer this now(ie. Sage publications, etc.)

My name is Steve Wasserman and I own a service named RETRIEV-IT. I am
located in L.A. and I fedex & fax to clients outside of L.A. I have access
to all these types of journals. Basic prices are $32.00 for up to 5
citations. For more info, please give me a call at 310-850-0022 or voice
mail 310-587-5555. Thanks.

There's a great guy in Los Angeles, Steve Wasserman, who has a little
service called Retrieve-It. He has access to academic & private
collections
all over the LA area, and is a real can do guy. Give him a call at
310-587-5555 and leave a message. Don't leave a long one, because the
cutoff on his message service comes really quickly. When he says that
he'll
get back to you in 15 minutes he's not kidding around. He'll take all of
the info in person and get you the articles as quickly as you need them.

Information Express is an info. broker which has access to Stanford and
several UC libraries. You can fax, e-mail phone in cites and they will
obtain the articles for you. They work very quickly and give you status
reports. They can be reached at415-494-8787 or www.exress.com. They are
based in Palo Alto, CA and do EXCELLENT work.

Have you tried Uncover?
For about $30 they'll fax it to you in a few hours.
I work for the consulting arm of a law firm, and that's where I usually
find my "oddball" articles.

A lot of large academic libraries run fee-based document delivery
services; they will mail or fax you articles from their collections and
bill
you. One of these that I have found helpful is Purdue University's
Technical Information Service (TIS). You can order documents online at
http://www.lib.purdue.edu/tis/ <http://www.lib.purdue.edu/tis/> . You can
get same-day delivery by fax if you need something fast and I've found them
to be very reliable with call-backs, etc. I believe Purdue's OCLC symbol
is
IPL.

You might want to check the LLRX.com Document Delivery Resource Center at
http://www.llrx.com/resources2.htm. We've listed services that I've used,
and also some that were recommended on the list in response to previous
questions.
