THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial
Library and over 20 school and department libraries and two low-use
shelving facilities. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly
600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of
faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other
areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare
books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic
resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is
engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main
library building, the complete conversion of the Library's catalog, and
various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly
information and digital preservation.
THE LAW LIBRARY AND UNIVERSITY
The Lillian Goldman Law Library with a collection of over one million
volumes and volume equivalents houses one of the world's finest collections
of printed legal materials. It is located in spectacularly renovated
facilities within the heart of the Yale Law School complex, and serves the
legal research needs of the Law School and University communities. Its
recently completed renovation project has enabled the library to more fully
support the needs of twenty-first century legal researchers by integrating
access to print and on-line sources throughout the facility. The Law
Library is a leader in its use of technology.
Lillian Goldman Law Library's Technical Services Division provides support
for a multi-format collection growing at a rate of approximately 16,000 new
volumes per year with a staff of 4 full-time professional librarians and
11.5 full-time library assistants. The materials budget administered by
Technical Services is over $1.5 million annually, for books, serials,
on-line services, binding and preservation. The library is in the final
stages of reclassifying a major portion of the collection to Library of
Congress.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Manager of Serials Services at the Lillian Goldman Law Library is
responsible for the bibliographic and physical control of continuing
resources in a dynamic and challenging environment. The Law Library serves
the faculty and students of a research-oriented law school with a strong
tradition of interdisciplinary scholarship, as well as other researchers
from the larger scholarly and legal communities.
Reporting to the Associate Director for Technical Services this new
position is designed to challenge an ambitious career-motivated librarian
who is eager to gain broad technical services experience and is excited
about integrating continuing resources cataloging with the management of
serials check-in and binding. This new position will work with the
Managers of Acquisitions Services and Cataloging Services to reshape
technical services for maximum effectiveness in a highly automated
environment.
Essential duties of the position include: performing continuing formats
cataloging and record enhancement; working closely with other catalogers in
solving problems in the maintenance of bibliographic and check-in
records; supervising a staff of two serials check-in assistants and two
binding assistants. The incumbent also is expected to participate in
library planning, committees and task forces and to participate in campus,
regional, and national professional development and collaborative activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires an MLS from an ALA accredited library school and a
minimum of two years professional experience as a law serials librarian
which includes serials cataloging and supervision. Library training and
experience should demonstrate facility using microcomputers and solid
knowledge of an integrated library system with a preference for Innovative
Interfaces. This position also requires familiarity with RLIN or OCLC and
the tools contained in Cataloger's Desktop and Classification Plus such as
AACR2, Cataloging Rules for the Description of Looseleaf Publications, MARC
including MARC holdings format, CONSER guidelines, LCSH, and Library of
Congress law classification.
The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, possess superior
communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrate a strong service
orientation and an ability to work with varied user groups, be able to
function effectively in a team environment, be able to use and train staff
in computer applications for materials processing and bibliographic
control, and have an awareness of current trends in law library technical
services.
