Powell, Goldstein, Frazer, & Murphy, WashDC

Last Friday, reference law librarian John Thompson of
Powell, Goldstein, Frazer, & Murphy asked for
assistance in obtaining some French materials, and
promised to "pay photocopying and shipping costs".

Although the materials must be readily available in
Washington DC, I agreed to photocopy, scan and e-mail
them. I did that, Friday evening. I e-mailed Mr.
Thompson that he could download the articles at

http://members.xoom.com/juridique/misc/juillard.pdf

http://members.xoom.com/juridique/misc/nguyen.pdf

and

http://members.xoom.com/juridique/misc/salem.pdf

It had taken me 20 minutes to do the photocopying, and
an hour to scan the resulting 100 or so pages. I asked
Mr. Thompson in return to donate $10 to charity (I
used up most of a £10 copycard) and confirm that he
had done so.

Not a word have I had of acknowledgement. But,
unfortunately, that has been unfailingly the result
when I have taken the trouble, over the past year or
two, to procure foreign materials on behalf of
librarians in private law firms. And, since I am a
retired legal researcher and writer, the cost comes
out of my own pocket, not some institution's.

I am, therefore, signing off.

The journals are easy: everybody has Clunet (Journal
de droit international) and Revue générale. I'll
photocopy the articles and e-mail them to you as Adobe
Acrobat *.pdf files this afternoon.

I checked the PUF web site (http://www.puf.com) but
your book is probably out of print. But it's there in
the Columbia Law School catalog:

2nd Floor
Call # JX6271 L392
Author Laviec, Jean-Pierre
Title Protection et promotion des investissements :
étude de droit international économique
Paris : Presses universitaires de France, c1985

Columbia has a document delivery service; you can
telephone them and arrange for the pages you need to
be sent or faxed.

I'm sure I could find the book here in London, too,
but since so many US libraries have blanket orders
with PUF I can't see the point in running around
England for it.

As for the photocopying charge, you can give the 10
cents a page it will cost me to charity.
