Folks:
Today in Minnesota we are being deluged with the "I love You" virus. The
Supreme Court, where my wife works, has apparently had to shut down their
e-mail, as have a couple of major law firms. I received 8 copies of it on my
home system from people people I didn't recognize, and it was recently on
Law-lib allegedly from Peter Beck of AALL, so we can assume AALL
headquarters are infected. (The virus replicates and sends itself, once
viewed, so if you get it from someone you know it doesn't mean they actually
sent it to you.)
A note on deleting the virus: If you use Microsoft Outlook, or any other
e-mail program that stores deleted messages without actually getting rid of
them, remember to delete the "I love You" messages from your deleted message
storage, as well as from your regular in-box. In Outlook, look for the
"deleted items" folder, select the messages within it and delete them.
Outlook will ask you if you are sure you want to permanently delete the
messages. click on OK.
If you do not fully delete these messages, then they are still on your
system, and capable of wreaking their havoc if anyone tries to open them up.
Because e-mail in the "deleted items" folder in Outlook is just as
accessible as any other items, this is a real risk.
Forewarned is forearmed.
