Senior Law Librarian at the Utica Supreme Court Library, Utica, NY. This
is a competitive/provisional position in the New York State Unified
Court System. Base salary is $48,180/annually.
An appointment will be made from this posting only in the event no
permanent appointment is made from the existing civil service eligible
list. Under the existing rules for the Unified Court System, an
appointment may be made on a provisional basis if there is no eligible
list for the position. To be appointed on a permanent basis, you will
have to take the exam and be among the top three acceptors.
Qualifications: One (1) year of permanent, competitive class service in
the Law Librarian title or Masters degree from an accredited school of
Library Science and three (3) years of work experience in a law library
or a library specializing in the social sciences, e.g., political
science, economics, business, criminal justice, sociology or Law degree
from an accredited law school and three (3) years of work experience in
a law library or library specializing in social sciences, e.g.,
political science, economics, business, criminal justice, sociology or
an equivalent combination of education and experience. While these are
minimum qualifications for this title, consideration may be given to
education and experience directly related to the assignment.
Distinguishing Features of Work: Under the supervision of a District
Administrative Judge or Principal Law Librarian, Senior Law Librarians
provide professional library services by implementing policies, making
acquisitions, performing original cataloging and classifying materials
using international computer-based systems or manual systems based on
standard library guidelines. They coordinate and implement resource
sharing. Assist in budget preparation and resource allocation, and
perform other related library and administrative duties. Senior Law
Librarians supervise law Librarians and clerical personnel. They may
perform legal research, oversee chambers collections. Senior Law
Librarians generally have responsibility for legal research collections
that include legal research materials relating to specialized areas of
the law that are not generally found in standard collections, that have
on-site access to one or more automated research systems used on a
regular basis, and that regularly serve a large number of judges. They
may coordinate operations of a few geographically separate legal
research collections.
Assignment: Reviews and evaluates legal research materials in all
formats to identify items to be added or withdrawn from the collections.
Operates and helps evaluate library systems, manual and automated and
prepares summaries and reports of systems operations. Classifies and
originally catalogs new items in the collection according to library
classification schedule and established guidelines and constantly
monitors effectiveness of collection organization. Answers reference
queries from library users in person and by telephone using all
available library resources. Consults with judges and their staff on
legal problems and identifies research alternatives. Trains and
supervises subordinate staff, makes work assignments, monitors progress
and evaluates staff performance. Prepares reports and monitors
expenditures of legal research budgets for libraries and for chambers
collections and provides information for budget compilation or
monitoring.
