Thanks to all who responded to my question asking for surveys of what law
firms spend on materials and online.
One recommendation was the Altman Weil Survey of Law Firm Economics. If you
don't get the survey they have some data available on their web site at
http://www.altmanweil.com/publications/surveys/slfe99/intro.htm
<http://www.altmanweil.com/publications/surveys/slfe99/intro.htm> .
Summaries of this survey appear in IOMA's Law Office Management &
Administration Report, the most recent one I have seen was dated March 1998
page 2.
Price Waterhouse Coopers also does a Law Firm Statistical Survey that
compares your law firm with others in your town and area. This gives some
"Information Services" data also. These are harder to borrow since law firm
personal data is included.
AALL is collecting this information as part of the biennial salary survey.
The last published data was published in three parts in AALL Spectrum. The
April 1998 issue was part one, staffing; May 1998 part two, library
spending; June 1998 part three budget breakdowns. I understand from Peter
Beck at AALL that they hope to have the 1999 data available after May 1st.
It will be again in the Spectrum or if more timely it will be posted on
AALLNet with a message sent on LawLib.
Thanks to Katie Laughlin, Mariann Storck, Christine Graesser and Laura Olsen
Dugan for their suggestions.
