One of our lawyers is dealing with a contract that refers to the German
index of producers' prices of industrial products. I've been to the website
of the Federal Statistical Office Germany and found the current figure. The
current figures use a base of 100 which was set in 1995 (just as the U.S.
Consumer Price Index uses a base of 100 set in 1982-1984). The problem is
that the contract I'm dealing with was written in 1979, when the reference
base year was 1976. I need to find out how to convert the current number to
the old system. I've called the German embassy, consulate, German
Information office, and the German American Chamber of Commerce. I've also
called the person at the German statistical office who is in charge of these
numbers. Unfortunately, my German is non-existent, and his English wasn't up
to the task. A Lexis search didn't reveal anything helpful.
Has anyone else dealt with this issue? In the alternative, are there any
German speakers out there who would be willing to lend me a hand in
communicating with the person in the statistical office? (I have an email
address for him.)
This is for my managing partner and I'd really like to be able to get this
answer for him. If anyone can help, I'd be forever grateful!
