Bess,

you can check the corporate status on the Sec ofState wensite

http://204.147.113.12/list.html

The Insurance Dept has a Financila Surveillance section that might be of
help.

Subject: California title insurance companies

Can anyone please tell me how I can determine if a specific title insurance
company is registered to do business in the state of California? We need to
find out if they have posted a bond (which I think is a requirement of
operating as a title insurance company). Escrow companies have to post bonds
of a certain amount, but do title companies have to?
I know that they are incorporated in California and have "title company" in
their name. Don't know if they are an underwritten company if that matters.

This seems like a relatively simple question, but I have done extensive
calling to the Dept. of Insurance as well as searching their web site. The
phone tag is going on and on...

        TIA,
