I speak and write about this on a fairly regular basis, so I thought I'd
throw a few morsels your way. I have had quite a bit of success simply
running the company names through the newspapers, as well. Good luck.

A great place to find info on more than 14,000 public and private companies
worldwide is Hoover's, located at http://www.hoovers.com. Rather than a
basing your decisions on an in-house marketing department, at Hoover's
you'll be reading company reports put together by 120 editors in Austin,
Texas. The editors actually research and write the company information and
in so doing, they compare and contrast the data to that prepared by the
companies and submitted to the SEC or by other companies with a different
vested interest. A good example is with GM. Sure, you can find out that they
are in the automotive industry by reading their own 10K, however, only at
Hoover's will you learn that they are the largest automaker on the planet!
For a fee, Hoover's offers access to information on another 35,000
companies.

http://www.bondra.com/comptraining.htm#private contains a great compilation
of links to companies which do not trade on stock exchanges. It is often
difficult to find very much information on these companies, other than a
brief directory listing, estimated net sales, and sometimes news articles
which can be found using a search in various regional newspapers, trade
publications and newswires (though usually only larger companies utilize
this type of service).

Try the following sites for directory information.

Companies Online from Dun & Bradstreet http://www.companiesonline.com/

ComFind -search by Business Category/Product or Service/Company Name
http://www.comfind.com/

CorpTech - Database of 50,000 manufacturers and developers of high tech
products. For free, and without registering, you can get the name, address,
phone, fax, ownership information (if the company is a subsidiary of a US or
foreign company, this site will tell you which one), sales range, CEO,
sector, a brief description of the activities and the year the company was
founded. If you register, you can run searches on any or all of these
criteria, which makes this page particularly valuable.

Forbes 500 Largest Private Companies This list gives the top 500 private
companies and their ranking.
http://www.forbes.com/tool/toolbox/private500/index.htm

Inc. 500 Inc. 500 rankings are based solely on revenue growth over a
five-year period. This Inc. 500 area of Inc. Online was completely updated
on November 1, and includes further details on all the 1999 winners.

Thomas Register - A large index of manufacturers: you can search on the name
or the product of the 155,000 US and Canadian companies in its database.
Gives address, phone number and description of products. In some cases,
links to on-line product catalogs are provided. This is a good site to visit
if you want to know what a company does, or if you want to know which
companies make a certain type of product. Note that this is a list of
manufacturers. http://www4.thomasregister.com/index.html

Web 100 -this is a list of the top 100 companies that have a presence on the
Web. It is a combination of both public and private companies.
