For items that come in the mail, if it's not appropriate to our
collection it goes into recycle unless it looks really good for one of
the local public schools to review/add. We don't have space for
anything that isn't supporting our mission.
Walk-in or phone requests get told that we have a very specialized
collection and we would be happy to take and use items that are pertinent.
But we want the option to offer duplicates to other institutions or
discard inappropriate materials. So far, that has pleased everyone.
When I first came to the Lab, the Library was still receiving
review copies of books for Chesapeake Science (which became Estuaries),
despite multiple letters of notification. At first I returned items with
a polite note, then decided that if they were too lazy to remove us from
lists I'd be too lazy to return them.
