Position Available: Department Head, Biological and Agricultural Sciences
Salary Range: $42,996 - $88,848 (Associate Librarian I to Librarian V) (Salary and appointment based on experience and qualifications)

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research Services & Collections, the Head of the UC Davis General Library Biological and Agricultural Sciences (Bio-Ag) Department provides the leadership and vision for departmental individuals to proactively meet the research, teaching, and community service mission of the UC Davis faculty, staff, and students in the agricultural and life sciences. Major activities conducted by the Bio-Ag librarians include outreach to faculty, staff, and students, reference and specialized instructional services, and collection development and management for undergraduate and research levels. The Head promotes faculty liaison and system-wide resource sharing activities and collections, and collaborates with other library leaders to deliver timely and effective services and to develop book and journal collections to meet the dynamic growth of the campus research and teaching needs. As the administrative head of the Bio-Ag Department, the incumbent guides the Bio-Ag staff (4 FTE librarians and 3.2 FTE support staff including students) in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating ongoing activities and special projects.
Qualifications: Substantial experience and demonstrated achievement in reference and instructional services and collection development activity in a major academic or research library and successful relevant supervisory experience are required. Demonstrated understanding of the sciences research process, scholarly communication, and copyright and intellectual property issues is critical as well an understanding of the impact of current trends in information and educational technology on the sciences disciplines. Successful experience in applying effective group dynamic principles and appropriate technologies to deliver services to a sciences clientele and to develop relevant collections is essential. Academic background in a sciences field is preferred.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a variety of library employees and library users in a complex and dynamic multicultural environment is required. Ability to successfully establish and sustain collaborative relations with faculty when planning services and developing book and journal collection is important. Demonstrated ability to lead and to motivate librarians and staff is essential. Demonstrated successful oral and written communications skills are critical. Graduate degree in librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or its equivalent is expected.
The Environment: The UC Davis General Library Biological and Agricultural Sciences Department serves the faculty, staff, and students in the agricultural and life sciences academic programs who are primarily based in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and the Division of Biological Sciences (DBS). CAES and DBS represent one of the largest and most diverse research and teaching programs in the United States. In addition to the world renown Viticulture and Enology Department, there are a number of interdisciplinary research institutes located at sites throughout California.
The UC Davis General Library (www.lib.ucdavis.edu) ranks among the top 45 research libraries in North America, with current holdings of over 3 million volumes, including over 32,000 currently received serials. The General Library is an active partner with the California Digital Library (www.cdlib.org), and is currently embarking on several digital library collections initiatives.

Benefits: Librarians are academic appointees. They earn 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per annum.
