Dear Members:
The world's largest offshore oil rig passed our lab around 10:45 a.m. this
morning and what a spectacular sight! With permission, I'd like to send 2
pictures as attachments in another email. So, I'll wait before I do it.
Article from Corpus Christi CallerTimes:
The world's largest offshore oil and gas production facility is scheduled
to move through the Port Aransas jetties this morning after seven months of
work at Kiewit Offshore Services in Ingleside. ....
The Thunder Horse, owned by BP and ExxonMobil, is expected to produce 200
million cubic feet of natural gas per day and about 250,000 barrels of oil
per day, which can be refined into about five million gallons of gasoline.
This is enough fuel to power about 6.5 million homes.
Exploration will take place in the Gulf of Mexico's Mississippi Canyon
about 150 miles southeast of New Orleans in 6,000 feet of water.
Parts of the Thunder Horse were built in South Korea and Morgan City, La.,
and the final assembly of the platform was done at Kiewit.
Another platform, Atlantis, left South Korea at the end of March and should
arrive at Kiewit at the end of May after a 60-day journey around the
southern tip of the African continent, said BP spokeswoman Ayana McIntosh-Lee.
Like the Thunder Horse, final assembly of Atlantis will take place at Kiewit.
Once assembled and stationed in the Gulf of Mexico, the semi-submersible,
30,000-metric-ton facility will be the deepest moored platform in the
world, anchored in more than 7,000 feet of water.
The Atlantis will have the capacity to produce and 180 million cubic feet
per day of natural gas and 200,000 barrels of oil.
