The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library and its Archives have been funded for
a two-year oral history project, targeting about forty interviewees. Oral histories
reveal important insights about disciplines and intellectual communities, providing
interviewees the opportunity to tell their story, their version of events, their
experience, as an active player, instead of the passive subject mentioned in
documents. We will use these interviews to probe key events and controversies, such
as the experiences of those who worked at Scripps on the Pacific atomic tests of the
1950's, Scripps contributions to research on plate tectonics, the first measurements
of atmospheric CO2, the discovery of the undersea thermal vents, under-represented
groups like women in science, and key personnel involved with Scripps ship
operations.
