    The appointee will be responsible for the development, coordination,
    administration and management of the Pacific Islands Marine Resources
    Information System, a special information network and collection at the USP
    Library. He/she will be required to work closely with the Marine Studies
    Programme and the University Library on marine information and to meet the
    information needs of academic, students, marine and fisheries officers and
    any other persons working in related areas in the Pacific region.

    The person will be expected to offer customer, technical and advisory
    services related to all aspects of library management. These
    responsibilities include:the maintenance of a regional marine resources
    database including preparation and submission of electronic bibliographic
    records with abstracts to the International Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries
    Abstracts (ASFA) database; the development of the collection of print and
    electronic marine resources; the provision of information and reference
    services; support and participation in the Library`s information literacy
    and faculty liaison programme; the provision of technical services of
    acquisitions, cataloguing and gifts and exchanges including editorial tasks
    associated with the production of publications;
    the maintenance of information exchange links with national, regional and
    international institutions in the marine/fisheries sector; the training of
    paraprofessional library and fisheries personnel in the region on the
    development of libraries as part of in-country assistance and outreach
    services; the maintenance and development of marine information
    dissemination products such as subject bibliographies, newsletter etc; and
    to contribute to overall library development and weekend and evening duties.

    Applicants must have a professional qualification in Library Information
    Studies recognised by an accrediting body such as the Australian Library and
    Information Association (ALIA); have relevant work experience in an academic
    library; proven ability to manage a special collection and/or a section of a
    library; have proven experience in the provision of library and information
    services to distance and on-campus students and library users; have sound
    knowledge and experience in the use of AACR2, LC Classification and subject
    headings, LCRI and MARC and abstracting and indexing; be familiar with IT
    and the use of the Internet, CD-ROMS and online databases; have a science or
    marine studies background or with marine (social science) experience; some
    experience with information literacy programmes and liaison with faculty
    members; supervisory skills and ability to train library personnel; have
    excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work both
    independently and to contribute effectively as a team.

    Preference will be given to applicants with knowledge of/experience with
    marine information resources and national, regional and international
    sources of marine information; experience in dealing with library users in a
    multicultural environment; experience in working with national, regional and
    international organisations and agencies; knowledge of national, regional
    and international agencies in the marine sector; publishing and editorial
    skills and work experience in a developing country.

    The appointee will report directly to the Project Director and will be
    responsible for setting up and providing a virtual information service.

    Responsibilities
    The key responsibilities will include: creating and managing and maintaining
    the on-line regional basic education resource centre; coordinating the
    provision of the on-line resources centre information services to the
    region; collecting relevant web resources in print and electronic formats;
    documentation of existing curriculum and training programmes; documentation
    of other specified educational materials, programmes and activities in the
    region; assisting the region in establishing national education information
    centres and coordinating training activities in this area; liaising with
    member states, institutions, educators, researchers and education systems;
    assisting with the production of project publications; and cataloguing using
    AACR2, MARC21 and where appropriate Metadata.

    Qualifications and experience
    Applicants must have a degree in Library/Information Science with
    professional qualifications recognised by an accrediting body such as
    A.L.I.A.; relevant work experience in academic libraries; sound knowledge
    and familiarity with library technology and automated systems; experience in
    the use of AACR2, classification and subject headings, MARC21 and Metadata;
    proven experience in the provision of library services to distant library
    users; proven experience in searching electronic resources such as CD-ROMs
    and the Internet; experience in collecting and documenting Pacific materials
    and serials; experience in training adults and conducting workshops.

    Preference will be given to applicants with a positive attitude to team
    work, excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills,
    experience of working in the Pacific and sensitivity to cross-cultural and
